The River Lagan Today
Further measures were undertaken to improve the river’s surroundings and water quality:
-
The sewerage system was improved and upgraded. Water Service announced further plans to construct a £100 million state of the art sewerage system that will significantly improve water quality in the Lagan and Blackstaff rivers.
-
The river was dredged to remove as much of the sediments (silt) as possible. A programme of dredging continues.
-
Low-level withdrawal pipes were built into the weir, which take away the poor quality water on the river bed back through the weir to the seaward side. This reduces the salt content in the river.
-
Laganside instigated a water quality programme. Water quality is now measured twice a week, records are made of the water temperature, salt content and dissolved oxygen levels. Water quality is graded A – excellent, B - good, C - unsatisfactory and D - polluted. Generally the quality is A or B.
-
A riverbed aeration system was installed upstream to mix and oxygenate the saline and river waters. |
