The River Lagan is the focal point of the Laganside area and Laganside was  instrumental in encouraging water based activity on the Lagan including canoeing, rowing, dragon boating, powerboating etc.

Alongside this promotion of the River Lagan, Laganside was very aware how important it was to take health & safety into consideration when near water. As a result, they  introduced water safety classes to the public to ensure that the local community were aware of the dangers of the river and able to act in a crisis situation.

Laganside was also responding to a demand from the community to make young people aware of the dangers of the river as there have been a number of incidents involving young people and vandalism around the river. Life rings were being thrown into the water, lights along the riverside pathways were being broken and stones were being thrown at river users.

Lagan Watersports run watersafety classes to schools and groups from the Laganside Local Community. The classes are an hour long and include a short video presentation.
