Cathedral Quarter

Girls relaxing at Cathedral Quarter St. Annes Cathedral Cobbled street

The historic Cathedral Quarter is a distinctive site within Laganside. Central to this area is the magnificent St Anne’s Cathedral. Cathedral Quarter is the centrepiece of a lively, cultural community – a home for the arts as well as cafes, bars and quality restaurants.

During 2003/4 streetscape work was carried out which involved the relaying of traditional cobble surfaces, the widening of existing pavements and extensive use of Caithness stone which has made the area more attractive.

Public art was a dominant feature of the streetscape enhancement process. Paddy McCann’s piece, ‘The Calling’ was installed in Gordon Street along with Peter Rooney’s coin stack bollards entitled ‘Penny for your thoughts’ and Eleanor Wheeler’s ceramic piece ‘Mapping History’ in Waring Street.

Cotton Court, one of Laganside’s three Managed Workspaces within Cathedral Quarter is fully occupied. The Managed Workspace buildings provide affordable accommodation to a range of arts, craft and community groups. Cotton Court has an attractive ground floor gallery area that can be used for public or corporate events and it also houses 2 Taps tapas & wine restaurant which is proving a popular venue for lunch or an early evening drink.

The Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival continues to go from strength to strength and it has played a key role in creating awareness of the area, nationally and internationally.
